Welcome to the CCIH Advanced Learning Modules!

All of these modules serve as stand alone learning experiences that are specifically designed to continue building on the foundational awareness, knowledge, and skills covered in the online course. Each module is designed to take 30-minutes and includes: Overview, Learning Material, Group Discussion, and Evaluation. Refer to the Engagement Guide to get started.

The Value of Discomfort

This module includes a presentation from Luvvie Ajayi Jones who reminds us that "your silence serves no one". She hopes to encourage all of us to get a little more comfortable with being uncomfortable. 

My Story & My Culture

Our unique stories shift and grow from situation-to-situation and as we move through phases of life. This module we hear from Smrithi Ram on how cultural fluency is a strength as she shares her own struggles with detachment from her culture. 

Burnout & Stress Management

This module is suggested for the month of April to recognize “Stress Awareness Month.” 

This module is an invitation to consider how anger is not something to push aside and may even be used in beneficial ways. In addition to watching a TEDTalk on “why getting mad is healthy”, you will practice a 5-10 minute mindfulness exercise of your choosing or from a suggested list. 


Awareness of Others

Teacher Michael Yates reflects on Chris, a Mexican student enrolled in summer school courses, whose "greatest dream in life is to go to jail”. Michael believes in empowering students, like Chris, to see themselves differently. 

LGBTQ+

This module is suggested for June Pride Month or October LGBTQ+ History Month

Implicit Biases & Stereotypes of Asian and Pacific Islanders

This module is suggested for some time in the month of May to recognize “Asian and Pacific American Heritage Month”

In this module we will view a TEDTalk from 18-ear old Canwen Xu about her experiences growing up in both Asian and American cultures. We also watch as East Asians react to harmful Hollywood depictions of Asian characters using “yellow face”. 


The Implicit Bias & Stereotypes of Indigenous People

This module is suggested for some time in the month of November to recognize “Native American Heritage Month

Leader of community development work, Kelly Terbasket, shares her experiences growing up as Syilx and European in the land of the Okanagan. Her presentation concludes with a short 1-minute exercise for you to ground in your awareness.

Health Disparities

Social determinants of health are the conditions in places where people are born, live, learn, work, play, worship, and age that affect a wide range of health risks and outcomes. In this module, Veronica Scott-Fulton shares stories on how family background, neighborhoods, and access to healthcare impact health outcomes. She challenges us to participate in changing the narrative around health inequity.  

Difficult Dialogues

Here we will listen to a conversation with Emmanuel Acho about race that many white people have never been able to have. The guest to this conversation is actor Matthew McConaughey who shares his experiences as he has an “uncomfortable conversation with a Black man”.  


Rebuilding Relationships

Eva Minkoff speaks about her lengthily personal experience with chronic illness and her work in health research. She suggests alternate ways forward for health care that is built on relationships which value respect, communication and trust.
